In Scrappy Cupcake Angels, Jodi makes a scrapbook album of her son’s first school year. Putting together a scrapbook is a fun way of documenting your child’s progress. You can include in it things such as their artwork, certificates, stories, lists of books they read, photographs of their friends, school sports days, school trips etc. It can be a fun activity to share with your child. They can help to embellish the pages, and it is a wonderful record of their schooldays for them to look back on when they are grown.
This is a page I made of my first day at school. I like using layering on my pages, so I layered several scrapbook papers and a graph page from one of my old school maths books. I inked or chalked the edges of all the papers to add interest. I added a border of numbered washi tape along the bottom of the page, and used torn strips of washi tape across the corners of the pictures. I took a photo of some of my favourite early childhood books, keeping the black and white theme, and added a few embellishments such as purple brads and a fancy paper clip.
It really takes me back to see that picture of me as a determined five-year-old, full of excitement and anticipation for what lay ahead. Unfortunately I don’t have many mementos from my schooldays. I detested school and threw away anything that reminded me of it long ago. I wish, now, that I did have a scrapbook with bits and pieces from those years, that I could look back on, but I am thankful for that photo that my parents took as I embarked on my journey of knowledge all those years ago.

My mom saved so many of our things! She had school memories books for each of us. It’s nice to go back through them and remember people and happenings and see how we’re all the same or how we’ve changed. I have a few scrapbooks for my own kids but I don’t have much time to spend on them these days. I suppose I’ll go back to them eventually. I do enjoy putting them together. This was a great post. Thanks for sharing!

It is lovely to have scrapbooks of memories to look back on. I know that your children will appreciate them in the years to come. In this age of digital cameras, when photos tend to be stored on computers and iPhones, rather than printed, it is nice to have physical books of memories that can be passed down to future generations. Thanks for your comment!

You’re welcome! It’s interesting, I think, to them to know there are books about them living on our bookshelves. Our youngest really likes to look at the picture albums and scrapbooks, even now! It’s great fun!

You are very lucky! I think it is important to keep things that document the past and people’s lives, not only for those involved, but for future generations.

Take a look at a picture of me as a five-year-old, in a scrapbook layout of my first day at school, posted on my Wattle Lane blog.
